An Orange County firefighter has been indicted for his involvement in a tragic hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian in Dana Point. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office made this announcement on Tuesday.
The indicted firefighter, 36-year-old Jeffrey Richard Grasinger from Rancho Santa Margarita, was officially charged with a felony count of hit-and-run causing permanent and serious injury. If found guilty, Grasinger could face up to four years in prison.
As a 13-year veteran of the Orange County Fire Authority, Grasinger is scheduled to appear for arraignment on November 17 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
The allegations against Grasinger involve the death of 24-year-old Said Darinel Sanchez on October 21. Prosecutors claim that Grasinger struck the victim at approximately 6:45 p.m. as he was crossing Pacific Coast Highway. The impact caused Sanchez to be thrown into the air, spin, and ultimately hit the pavement head-first. Grasinger allegedly failed to stop and offer assistance to the victim.
Authorities were able to trace the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run to a residence in Rancho Santa Margarita. At the scene, they discovered blood on the front of the vehicle, along with significant damage caused by the collision.
The Orange County Fire Authority has declined to comment on the case.
In his defense, Grasinger’s attorney, Paul Meyer, stated, “Mr. Grasinger has dedicated 13 years of his life to being a firefighter, repeatedly risking his life to save countless citizens. He firmly believes he is innocent of the charges brought against him.”
