Breaking News: September 2022 Sets New Record as Earth’s Hottest Month – Projected Warmest Year in History Awaits in 2023!

Last month was Earth’s hottest September EVER!

September 2023 saw an average surface air temperature of 16.38°C, making it the hottest September on record. This data, released by Copernicus, the EU climate change body, reveals that 2023 is on track to be the warmest year ever recorded.

Compared to the previous hottest September in 2020, last month’s average temperature was 0.5°C higher. It also exceeded the 1991-2020 average for September by nearly one whole degree, at 0.93°C. Looking back even further, September temperatures were 1.4°C higher than the average recorded between 1850-1900.

The average sea surface temperature for September, measured between 60°S–60°N, was 20.92°C, the highest on record for the month. This makes September the second-hottest month overall, behind only August 2023.

Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, explained that climate change and El Nino contributed to the extreme temperatures observed. Burgess emphasized the urgency for ambitious climate action, especially with COP28 coming up.

The global mean temperature for January to September 2023 is currently 1.40°C higher than the preindustrial average. This further highlights the need for action to tackle climate change.

The UK also experienced record-breaking temperatures in September, tying with 2006 as the joint hottest September on record. Additionally, both Antarctic and Arctic sea ice extents were at concerning low levels.

Overall, summer 2023 has been the hottest ever recorded worldwide. Scientists predict that unless the remaining months of the year are exceptionally cold, 2023 will break the record for the hottest year ever.

It’s important to note that while the warmest eight years have all occurred since 2015, the coldest year on record was back in 1904.
