Oct. 3 (UPI) — A Saudi Arabian athlete made history by shattering a Guinness World Record for rowing in open water. Kariman Abuljadayel accomplished this remarkable feat, rowing her boat across a distance of 6.2 miles in an astonishing time of 57 minutes and 24 seconds.

Abuljadayel, who rose to prominence as the first Saudi woman to participate in the 100-meter race during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, undertook this challenging endeavor in the Red Sea near Jeddah’s coastline.

Despite facing extreme heat and numerous other obstacles, Abuljadayel remained determined throughout her record-breaking attempt. She revealed, “The prevailing strong current that day slowed down the boat significantly. I had to exert more effort just to maintain movement, let alone achieve a fast pace in order to break the record.”

At one point, she admitted that she felt like giving up due to the immense challenges she was facing. However, an unwavering voice of determination inside her motivated Abuljadayel to keep rowing and surpass the imaginary barriers in her path.

Guinness World Records confirmed that Abuljadayel successfully achieved the fastest time for rowing 10 kilometers in open water, solidifying her place in history.

Expressing her gratitude, Abuljadayel acknowledged her mother, Suraya Alshehry, for nurturing her passion from an early age and guiding her along the way. She described her mother as her role model and hero.
