5 People Shot During Homecoming Week at Morgan State University

During Homecoming week at Morgan State University in Baltimore, a shooting incident occurred, resulting in five individuals being shot, including four students, according to the police. Thankfully, all the victims, aged between 18 and 22, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The incident took place near the Murphy Fine Arts Center and Thurgood Marshall Hall on the campus. Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that it seemed to be a dispute between two smaller groups and that the intended target was someone different from the victims. He also assured that the shooting wasn’t racially motivated, a sentiment echoed by Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott.

Christian Gatlin, a junior at the university, recounted the chaotic moments when the shooting began. Students started running as they heard what they initially mistook for fireworks. Shawn Pollard, another student, highlighted the panic that ensued, with everyone screaming and alerting others about the active shooter. Anaiah Pamplin, a freshman present in the cafeteria, described her shock upon hearing the gunshots and seeing people duck and run. The incident was eventually declared no longer an active shooter situation, and the shelter-in-place order on campus was lifted.

Freshman James Fitzgerald, who was in his dorm doing homework during the lockdown, expressed his fear when SWAT officers knocked on his door, unsure if it was the shooter. Irmani-Maure Beauvais, another student, was terrified to be away from home during the incident. The mayor of Baltimore expressed condolences to the Morgan community and called for national action, particularly from Congress. Classes at the university were canceled the following day as a precautionary measure.

Morgan State University’s Homecoming was taking place at the time of the shooting. The university president, David Wilson, announced plans to reassess the remaining Homecoming activities and would inform the community accordingly. He assured students and their families that support would be available through the Division of Student Affairs and the University Counseling Center. The White House also extended its support, with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasizing the need for the newly established Office of Gun Violence Prevention in light of this incident. The search for the shooter is ongoing, and the White House remains in contact with relevant authorities.
