In a shocking turn of events, special prosecutors in New Mexico are seeking to recharge actor Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust two years ago. This announcement comes six months after the charges against Baldwin were dropped. According to Deadline, the matter may now go before a grand jury within weeks. The decision to drop the charges in April was made due to the need for further investigation based on new evidence, as reported by the Santa Fe New Mexican.
The incident occurred when Baldwin was holding a replica revolver on the movie set, and it accidentally discharged, resulting in Hutchins’ death and injuries to director Joel Souza. Baldwin has consistently maintained that he did not pull the trigger, but a report from ballistics and forensic testing experts in August contradicts his claim. According to the AP, the experts found that the trigger had to be pulled or depressed for the gun’s hammer to be released. Additionally, replacement parts were used to reassemble the gun after it was damaged during FBI testing.
In a statement, special prosecutors Morrissey and Lewis stated that new evidence has emerged that implicates Baldwin in the death of Hutchins and the shooting of Souza. They believe that a panel of New Mexico citizens should determine whether Baldwin should face criminal charges. Baldwin’s lawyer responded by calling the prosecution misguided, stating that it is unfortunate a tragic incident has been sensationalized this way. The trial for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the movie’s armorer who faces charges including involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering, is set to start in February. (Read more Alec Baldwin stories.)
