After a series of suspicious fires in downtown Long Beach, a 31-year-old man named Cristian Jehovany Portillo was mistakenly arrested for arson and possession of a concealed dirk or dagger. However, he has since been released after investigators realized they had arrested the wrong person, as reported by Fox 11.
According to Chief Dennis Buchanan of the Long Beach Fire Department, the arrested individual matched the description of a person captured on surveillance video that was released to the public earlier in the week. Chief Buchanan stated during a news conference, “For the past two weeks, we’ve been dealing with five suspicious vehicle fires in parking structures within downtown Long Beach. It has been confirmed that these fires were intentionally set.”
The series of fires began on August 20 and continued for two weeks. Five vehicles were targeted, with two of them suffering extensive damage. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in any of the incidents.
