Breaking News: Jail Escapee Nayeri Files Claim Against Orange County

The man prosecutors dubbed the mastermind behind the 2016 jailbreak of three inmates from the Orange County jail in Santa Ana has filed a claim against the county based on comments made by Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer after the conviction.

44-year-old Hossein Nayeri filed the claim on Wednesday, seeking $25,000.

Nayeri, who was already serving two consecutive life sentences without parole for his involvement in a kidnapping-extortion scheme that included the sexual mutilation of a marijuana dispensary owner, was convicted in March for the jailbreak.

However, Nayeri was acquitted of kidnapping during a carjacking and other lesser charges, including simple kidnapping, carjacking, and false imprisonment.

In his claim, Nayeri accused Spitzer of acting with malice and ill will in his professional capacity by making remarks to the press on March 16 after the conviction. Spitzer referred to Nayeri as “one of America’s most dangerous criminals” and described him as conniving, manipulative, and a mastermind.

Nayeri argued that Spitzer’s statements were intended to harm and attack him before his sentencing. Nayeri was ultimately sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for the jailbreak.

“The defamatory and slanderous remarks made by District Attorney Todd Spitzer were not only conveyed to the press and local news stations, but they were also rebroadcasted countless times through various media platforms and search engines,” wrote Nayeri in the claim.

Spitzer responded to the claim by stating that his opinion of Nayeri remains unchanged. He reiterated that Nayeri is one of America’s most dangerous criminals, emphasizing that he is conniving, manipulative, and a mastermind.

Nayeri described Spitzer’s remarks as a “frantically thrown together rant” in response to legitimate questions from the media regarding the wastefulness of the trial. Nayeri also criticized the use of multiple vehicles and a helicopter to transport him to prison, seeing it as another misuse of taxpayers’ money.

“This wasteful transportation was solely intended for the personal gain of elected officials and was a manifest abuse of authority,” Nayeri claimed.

Nayeri suggested that the money spent on his transport could have been better utilized for local charities.

Spitzer dismissed Nayeri’s outrage over the use of taxpayer dollars, pointing out that Nayeri showed no concern for the cost of the search operation following his escape. Spitzer argued that the money invested in keeping Nayeri behind bars is well worth it.

“Nayeri didn’t care about the taxpayer dollars wasted searching for him, but now he’s angry because money was spent on his secure transport to prison instead of helping homeless veterans and single mothers,” Spitzer said.

“The money invested in keeping Nayeri incarcerated is justified.”
