The U.S. State Department has announced the organization of evacuation flights to assist Americans in leaving Israel amidst the escalating war with Hamas and the rising death toll in the conflict. As of Thursday afternoon, Israel’s military has reported that Hamas’ attack has resulted in the deaths of over 1,300 people, including at least 27 Americans, with around 3,200 individuals wounded. Gaza’s Ministry of Health has stated that Israel’s retaliatory strikes have claimed the lives of 1,537 people in Gaza, including 447 children, and left over 6,600 others injured. According to John Kirby, the National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications, there are currently fourteen U.S. citizens missing.
Israel’s response to Hamas’ attack over the weekend has left neighborhoods across Gaza flattened.
The magnitude of Israel’s counterattack has led a group of independent experts at the United Nations to denounce the “horrific” war crimes committed by Hamas. They warn that the “indiscriminate military attacks against the already exhausted Palestinian people of Gaza” amount to “collective punishment,” which is strictly prohibited by international law and constitutes a war crime.
In the midst of these events, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the situation from Israel on Thursday, while U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is scheduled to be in Israel on Friday.
