President Joe Biden initiates his visit to India with a private meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders engage in discussions about democracy, joint technology, and infrastructure projects, aiming to enhance their alliance.

In a joint statement following the meeting at Modi’s residence, the leaders express their commitment to various areas of collaboration, including semiconductors, higher education, carbon emissions reduction, 5G and 6G technology, and shipping lane access in the Indo-Pacific region.

Kurt Campbell, an advisor to Biden on the Indo-Pacific, acknowledges the developing bond between the two leaders, shaped by shared endeavors and aspirations over the past few years.

Biden is currently in New Delhi for the Group of 20 summit, where he is not scheduled to have any additional official bilateral meetings apart from his visit with Modi. However, the president will have the opportunity to interact with global leaders at the summit. Previously, in June, Modi was hosted by Biden at an extravagant state dinner held at the White House.

“The presence and active engagement of the United States, a country with which India has invested extensively in enhancing its relationship, in all the major initiatives to be unveiled in the coming days, was highly reassuring and gratifying to the Indian counterparts, and we value that,” Campbell stated.

According to the White House, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also participated in the meeting on behalf of the United States. The Indian delegation included External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Campbell acknowledges that the absence of China and Russia’s leaders at the summit was disappointing for India. Nevertheless, he emphasizes the undeniable opportunities available for the United States.

“We are fully committed to strengthening and deepening our relationship,” Campbell affirms. “As for China, it is up to them to share their reasons for not attending.”
