A man suspected of stabbing a 23-year-old passenger without provocation on a Metro B (Red) Line train in downtown Los Angeles has been charged with murder, announced prosecutors on Wednesday.
Charged with the murder of Jesse Rodriguez, Randy Lamale Nash, 31, allegedly followed Rodriguez onto a Metro train at Union Station before killing him, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
At his arraignment on Tuesday, Nash pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in downtown Los Angeles on October 13 for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for a trial.
“I extend my deepest condolences to Mr. Rodriguez’s loved ones,” stated District Attorney George Gascón.
“This tragic loss affects all of us, as many Angelenos rely on public transportation every day and should not fear random attacks during their commutes. My office will do everything possible to ensure justice for Mr. Rodriguez and his family.”
The murder charge against Nash includes an allegation that he used a hunting knife during the crime.
Prosecutors claim that Nash got up, pulled out a large hunting knife, and stabbed Rodriguez in the chest as the train approached Pershing Square station. The entire attack was captured on video surveillance, according to prosecutors.
When the train stopped, both Nash and Rodriguez exited the train. Two officers from the Los Angeles Transit Services Division observed Rodriguez holding his bleeding chest. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to the stab wound.
Nash, who fled the scene, was identified by his family members after they saw media-released images from the police. He was arrested on Saturday at a relative’s home in South Los Angeles.
Nash is currently being held on $2 million bail.
