The Martinez Gallery in Troy was founded by Laudelina Martinez, a college student with a deep interest in art. While studying literature, philosophy, and economics, Martinez found herself drawn to the artwork being created by her friends pursuing art degrees.
After college, Martinez embarked on a career in higher education, focusing on academic administration and policy shaping. However, her passion for art remained, and she often attended gallery exhibitions and gifted Latino art to her colleagues.
Despite her successful career in academia, Martinez never gave up on her dream of opening her own gallery. In 2001, she finally decided to pursue her love for art and opened the Martinez Gallery in the Collar City. This contemporary art gallery specializes in Latino art and has curated over 100 exhibitions.
The gallery showcases various art forms, including photography, fine and abstract art, portraits, sculptures, and installations. Each exhibition reflects Martinez’s eclectic taste and features many talented Latino artists, such as Jaime Suarez.
In addition to her work at the gallery, Martinez is also the president of the Capital Region Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Through this role, she helps connect Hispanic businesses with government agencies, financial institutions, and community stakeholders.
Despite her skill in curating, Martinez emphasizes that she is not an artist herself. Her passion lies in organizing and conceptualizing art in unique ways. She believes in the importance of artists being able to make a living from their work and seeks to make art a daily part of people’s lives.
According to Martinez, engaging with art is not only beneficial for mental health but also helps transmit cultural values and stimulates both the heart and intellect.
