Brazilian Congresswoman Calls on US to Revoke Visa of Former President Bolsonaro Amid Vaccine Scandal

A Brazilian congresswoman, Erika Hilton, has called on the United States to revoke the visas of former President Jair Bolsonaro and his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, following the revelation of a fake COVID-19 vaccine card scandal. The request comes as part of an investigation into the alleged falsification of vaccine records in Brazil.

On Wednesday, Bolsonaro’s residence in Brasilia was raided, and his cellphone was confiscated. His top aide, Mauricio Cid, was arrested in connection with the case. Six people in total were apprehended as part of the investigation, including João de Souza, the municipal secretary of Duque de Caxias, who is accused of altering vaccine records.

Erika Hilton took to Twitter to confirm her petition, stating that she had sent a letter to the US Embassy calling for the suspension of Bolsonaro, his wife, and their advisors’ visas. Hilton believes that the former president and his associates may have deliberately spread the coronavirus while pretending to be vaccinated, in addition to the deaths caused by their inaction and lies during the pandemic.

Investigators learned that city employee João de Souza was forced to provide the password for Duque de Caxias’ vaccination database, allowing false vaccine data to be entered for Bolsonaro, his daughter Laura Bolsonaro, two advisors, and Federal Deputy Gutemberg Reis. Bolsonaro has denied any involvement in the scandal and confirmed that he has never been vaccinated. However, the National Health Data Network shows records indicating that he and his daughter each received two Pfizer shots.

According to the Federal Police, the fake vaccine data was entered into the system on December 21 by João de Souza and was removed on December 27. Bolsonaro and his daughter traveled to the United States on December 30, just one day before his presidential term ended. João de Souza was among the individuals arrested on Wednesday.

This scandal has prompted Erika Hilton to call for the revocation of Bolsonaro and his wife’s US visas, as the investigation into the falsified vaccine records continues.
