The incredible story of Ukrainian soldier Serhii as he sits on his hospital bed in a public clinic in central Ukraine is truly remarkable. Despite shrapnel embedded in his legs, he remains in good spirits. The 36-year-old infantryman, known as “Fin,” had left behind his life in Finland to join the army after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Assigned to hold the eastern front line on the outskirts of Bakhmut, a supposed three-day mission turned into a harrowing two-week ordeal after intense enemy fire left Serhii and his fellow soldiers wounded and isolated. Facing constant bombardment, Serhii relied on a drone to deliver essential supplies while trapped in his trench.
As Russian troops closed in, Serhii managed to relay their coordinates to his commander to call in artillery strikes, despite the increasing danger. Eventually, with no other options left, he crawled through enemy territory to reach safety, enduring unimaginable fear and danger.
Reflecting on his recovery in the hospital, Serhii remains humble, emphasizing the sacrifices made by his comrades on the front line. His only wish is to return to a peaceful life, surrounded by friends, and out of harm’s way.
