Brad Pitt Fights Back: Seeking Dismissal of Claims by Former Jolie Company

Brad Pitt seeks dismissal of all claims against him in a cross-complaint filed by Angelina Jolie’s company. The company alleges that Pitt was behind an effort to take control of Chateau Miraval, the former couple’s country estate. The estate was purchased in 2008 and served as their wedding venue in 2014.

In September 2022, Nouvel LLC filed a $350 million cross-complaint in the Los Angeles Superior Court against Pitt, his company Mongo Bongo LLC, and other defendants. The allegations include tortious interference with contractual relations and prospective economic advantage, with the company also seeking punitive damages.

Pitt’s lawyers, in court papers filed Wednesday, argue that Nouvel’s goal with the cross-complaint is to “bully” Pitt into giving up his rights and handing over the family home and profitable business he built. They claim that these claims are baseless.

According to Pitt’s attorneys, Nouvel’s cross-complaint, when stripped of its “inflammatory rhetoric,” reveals a misguided effort to turn a disagreement between shareholders into leverage for litigation. Pitt’s lawyers argue that one of Nouvel’s causes of action, for a tortious interference with contract claim, does not meet the two-year statute of limitations. A hearing on the dismissal motion is scheduled for January 19 before Judge Lia Martin.

Prior to Nouvel’s cross-complaint, Pitt started the litigation by suing Jolie, Nouvel, and others in February 2022. Pitt alleged that Jolie, without his permission, sold Nouvel and her 50% stake in Chateau Miraval to the Stoli Group in October 2021. This sale was in violation of a previous agreement that they would not sell their respective interests in Miraval without each other’s consent.

Pitt, who is 59 years old, has been fighting against this sale since learning about it. His attorneys argue that he is suing to protect his rights. They claim that Nouvel, through Stoli’s purchase of the company, brought a $350 million lawsuit against Pitt and his entity Mondo Bongo as an act of retaliation.

According to the Nouvel cross-complaint, Pitt has been “waging a vindictive war” against Jolie and Nouvel since she filed for divorce in 2016. Nouvel is taking legal action to seek redress for Pitt’s alleged illegal and malicious actions that devalue its investments and restrict its role in the management of Chateau Miraval, which is famous for its rose wine production.

The cross-complaint further claims that Pitt wasted Chateau Miraval’s assets by spending millions on vanity projects, including swimming pool renovations and a recording studio. It also alleges that Pitt attempted to give 50% ownership of the valuable Miraval trademarks to his friend Marc Perrin for free.

Pitt’s offensive strategy, according to the cross-complaint, is an attempt to cover up his illegal and reprehensible conduct. Nouvel alleges that Pitt and his people have blamed Jolie, Nouvel, and Nouvel’s current owners for a business dispute that Pitt instigated and continues to escalate.
