B&Q Implements Energy-Saving Measures, Enhancing Shop Environment while Reducing Expenses

In an effort to reduce costs and mitigate the effects of rampant inflation, B&Q has implemented several energy-saving measures. The retailer, which also operates the Screwfix chain, has adjusted the temperature of its store heaters by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. Additionally, heating is now activated later in the morning and turned off earlier in the evening.

B&Q has also dimmed the lights inside and outside its stores, reducing their usage frequency to cut down on energy expenses. The company’s CEO, Thierry Garnier, stated that these initiatives are not only beneficial for customers and the environment, but also help maintain lower prices and decrease carbon emissions.

To further improve energy efficiency, B&Q has incorporated LED lighting and air source heat pumps into its stores. Garnier emphasized that these small changes make a significant difference in energy consumption while ensuring a positive shopping experience for customers. Consequently, the retailer’s total property energy consumption decreased by over 12% compared to the previous year.

Aldi, Morrisons, Co-op, and Curry’s are among other retailers implementing energy-saving strategies. As the economy grapples with the worst inflation crisis in four decades, companies are striving to minimize costs and avoid raising prices, which could deter price-conscious shoppers.

The British Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses have warned that numerous small businesses may be trapped in high-priced energy contracts. Therefore, companies are working to eliminate unnecessary expenses in order to reduce prices for their customers.

Despite these challenges, Kingfisher, B&Q’s parent company, reported a 0.8% increase in sales for the three months ending April. The company attributed this growth to favorable weather conditions, which boosted demand for outdoor furniture and gardening tools.
