Boyfriend of Joysee Cartagena Faces Murder Charges

A man from Florida has been apprehended and formally charged with murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend. The suspect, Joel Bauza, 50, allegedly attempted to mislead the authorities by suggesting that the victim had taken her own life. However, the Sanford police quickly shifted their focus to investigating the incident as a possible homicide.

Police received a distress call on July 17, reporting the discovery of the lifeless body of Joysee Cartagena inside her residence. Upon arrival, the Sanford Fire and Rescue personnel found Cartagena with a zip tie tightly fastened around her neck. Despite their attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted by the Lake County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the cause of death was manual strangulation.

Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith commended the diligent efforts of the investigators and medical examiner’s office, which helped reveal the truth behind Cartagena’s demise. Her obituary described her as a compassionate individual who touched the lives of many in her community.

Bauza’s Facebook account indicated that he was married to Cartagena, featuring numerous photos of the couple dating back to 2016. Close friends and acquaintances expressed their hope for justice following Bauza’s arrest, condemning his alleged actions towards Cartagena’s believed suicide.

Cartagena’s son, Steven Rivera Cartagena, shared his grief over losing his mother—a woman who selflessly cared for him and dedicated herself to helping others through her work at Seminole County Public Schools and JetBlue. Rivera Cartagena stated that he would honor his mother’s memory by pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with his college expenses.
