A Boston doctor has been accused of committing indecent acts, including masturbating, in front of a teenager during a flight from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Boston, Massachusetts in May 2022.
According to the Department of Justice, Dr. Sudipta Mohanty was arrested on Thursday and charged with one count of engaging in lewd, indecent, and obscene acts. This arrest adds to the growing number of disturbing incidents involving passengers since travel resumed after the pandemic.
Prosecutors claim that during a flight last year, Mohanty engaged in inappropriate behavior while seated next to a 14-year-old girl and later exposed himself.
An attorney representing Mohanty has not yet responded to Insider’s request for comment.
In a criminal complaint, it is stated that the teenager sat next to Mohanty and his partner, and noticed that Mohanty’s leg was moving up and down under a blanket. The teenager went to use the restroom and upon her return, Mohanty went to the restroom as well.
Prosecutors allege that Mohanty resumed masturbating when they were both seated without the blanket, and the teenager witnessed him ejaculating on himself. Mohanty then went to the bathroom for a second time, according to the complaint.
“When Mohanty returned to his seat, the teenager didn’t know what to do,” prosecutors said in the complaint. “Everyone around her was asleep.”
Eventually, the teenager moved to a row behind her grandmother, as there were no available seats next to her. The complaint states that “once off the plane and in the airport in Boston, the teenager informed her grandmother that the man sitting next to her had engaged in something ‘inappropriate’.”
“What Dr. Mohanty is accused of doing in front of a fourteen-year-old girl is reprehensible,” said Christopher DiMenna, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, in a DOJ press release. “Today’s arrest should make it crystal clear that the FBI takes crimes aboard aircraft seriously, ranging from sexual misconduct, as alleged in this case, to assault, interfering with the flight crew, and theft.”
Investigators state that they have interviewed the teenager and the family members who traveled with her in the days following the incident. In May 2023, federal agents approached Mohanty, who denied the allegations of the incident.
“I have no recollection of that,” Mohanty told prosecutors, according to the complaint.
