Boston College Puts Swimming and Diving Teams on Temporary Suspension: Here’s What You Need to Know!

Boston College has suspended its men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams indefinitely following the discovery of hazing within the program. While the university has not provided specific details about the hazing, the New York Times reports on the suspensions. In a statement, BC Athletics expressed a zero-tolerance policy towards hazing, assuring that all Swimming and Diving student-athletes will still have access to academic and medical resources.

The university has announced that the Office of the Dean of Students will conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the matter through the student conduct process. Massachusetts law defines hazing as any initiation method or conduct within a student organization that recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of any student or person. According to the Heights student paper, organizers of hazing could face up to a year in prison, a fine of up to $3,000, or both.

The Boston Globe reports that the Boston College Eagles finished last at the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference championships for both the men’s and women’s teams. The suspension came just as the season was beginning, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled “maroon vs. gold” competition and a road meet against George Washington University on October 7. (Earlier in July, Northwestern University fired its head football coach in response to a hazing scandal.)
