Boosting the Boston Celtics’ Roster: Jrue Holiday Joins in Trade with Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers shook up the NBA landscape by trading All-Star guard Jrue Holiday to the Boston Celtics on Sunday, adding fire to the Eastern Conference rivalry.

In exchange, the Celtics are sending center Robert Williams III and guard Malcolm Brogdon to the Blazers, according to the official announcement. Sources have revealed that the Blazers will also receive a 2024 first-round pick from the Golden State Warriors and a 2029 first-round pick.

The Trail Blazers are strategically collecting assets following the blockbuster Damian Lillard trade to the Milwaukee Bucks last Wednesday. This trade allowed them to acquire Jrue Holiday with the intention of trading him to the highest bidder over the weekend.

The Celtics aggressively pursued Holiday, aged 33, with plans to secure him on a long-term contract ahead of his impending free agency in 2024. Holiday’s inclusion in the Celtics’ lineup could potentially position them as the front-runners in the Eastern Conference.

Holiday is widely regarded as one of the league’s premier two-way guards, and his arrival in Milwaukee played a crucial role in the franchise’s successful bid for the 2021 NBA championship. Having experienced a nine-year gap between All-Star appearances, Holiday returned to the Eastern Conference All-Star team in 2023, making NBA history.

While the Blazers are interested in retaining Williams to pair with new center Deandre Ayton, Brogdon is expected to be involved in further trade discussions once he joins the Portland team, according to sources. In the absence of another trade, Brogdon will start the season with the Blazers. The team is committed to a young group of guards, including No. 3 draft pick Scoot Henderson, 2022 first-round pick Shaedon Sharpe, and Anfernee Simons, who signed a $100 million extension last summer.

Even prior to a potential Brogdon deal, the Blazers have already received substantial assets from the Lillard trade: Ayton, Williams, Brogdon, and first-round draft picks in 2024 (via Golden State, protected 1-4), 2029 (Milwaukee, unprotected), and 2029 (Boston, unprotected). Additionally, the Blazers have pick swaps lined up with the Bucks in 2028 and 2030.
