Oct. 12 (UPI) — Danish transportation giant Maersk has announced its collaboration with SpaceX to equip its ocean fleet with the revolutionary Starlink satellite system.
In a statement, Maersk revealed its plan to install the satellite systems on over 330 of its container ships. This integration will provide reliable and high-speed internet connectivity, with speeds of up to 200 megabits per second. The implementation of the Starlink system will not only enable Maersk’s seagoing colleagues to stay connected with their loved ones while at sea but also drive the expansion of seamless cloud solutions, taking vessel operations to new digital heights.
“By embracing high-speed connectivity through Starlink, we aim to empower our seafarers and accelerate the digital transformation of our operations,” said Leonardo Sonzio, Maersk’s head of fleet management and technology. “This technological advancement will positively impact efficiency and enable us to maintain our competitive edge in the global transportation industry.”
The decision to integrate the SpaceX Starlink system into Maersk’s fleet follows a successful pilot phase, in which more than 30 ships were equipped with this advanced internet technology. With the support of Starlink’s broadband network, Maersk can navigate its vessels with enhanced efficiency and connectivity, regardless of their location worldwide. Jonathan Hofeller, SpaceX vice president of Starlink commercial sales, believes this partnership will revolutionize the global transportation sector by offering seamless connectivity and boosting operational efficiency.
The installation process is expected to be completed by the first quarter of next year, signaling Maersk’s commitment to swiftly implementing cutting-edge technology in its operations. As of now, Starlink, operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has launched over 5,000 satellites and boasts a subscriber base of more than two million users. However, this massive fleet of satellites has raised concerns regarding space debris and potential hazards for other spacecraft in low orbit. Despite this, the Starlink system continues to disrupt the traditional satellite communications sector, with its rapid deployment capability overshadowing the lengthy testing and production processes of conventional systems.
