Boomers Hold Responsibility for Gen Z’s Reluctance to Work from Home

While online meetings and chat boxes have become the norm, they can never fully replace the value of in-person communication. The small talk, water-cooler moments, and coffee-machine conversations that take place in the office are crucial for creating, supporting, and deepening team cohesion. These informal interactions allow for quick problem-solving and enable managers to stay aware of work pressures, such as stress and reduced wellbeing. Additionally, office interactions often spark new innovative ideas.

Moreover, older colleagues have a responsibility to pass on their knowledge of the organizational culture, both the good and the bad, to their younger counterparts. However, this exchange goes both ways. While younger workers may appreciate the benefits of hybrid working, such as a better work-life balance and reduced commute times, they also risk missing out on valuable learning opportunities. Understanding workplace culture, including verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, observation, and participation, cannot be effectively taught online.

Mastering the intricacies of workplace culture plays a critical role in career progression. By being physically present in the office, younger employees have greater visibility and are less likely to experience unconscious bias. They are more likely to be involved in important projects or be informed about new job opportunities. These interactions are often less public in a virtual setting.

As we continue to navigate the shift towards remote and hybrid working, it remains to be seen whether it will result in productivity gains or losses for businesses and organizations. However, on intergenerational grounds, all generations are likely to face challenges and limitations.
