The Bonny Fire in Aguanga is nearing full containment, with 98% containment reported on Friday. The Riverside County Fire Department expects complete containment by Monday. This update marks the first increase in containment since Thursday evening, when it rose from 90% to 95%.
Following successful efforts overnight, firefighters have reinforced containment lines, extinguished hot spots, and canceled all mandatory evacuation orders related to the fire. These orders were lifted on Wednesday. However, evacuation warnings remain in effect for specific areas, including south of Bowers Road, north of Rim Rock Road, east of Bonny Lane, and west of Chapman Road.
In order to support other ongoing firefighting operations in Sage and Cabazon, personnel involved in managing the Bonny Fire have been released from duty on the fire lines. The fire originated near Bonny and Barber lanes on the edge of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation on July 27.
During the fire’s rapid spread on Friday afternoon, Cal Fire deployed air tankers and water-dropping helicopters to protect nearby homes. Despite their efforts, one outbuilding and a vehicle were destroyed. Thankfully, only one firefighter suffered minor injuries over the weekend.
At its peak, the Bonny Fire saw approximately 2,000 personnel involved in its containment, including county engine and hand crews, as well as firefighters from various local agencies. Hot shot crews from Kern County were also dispatched to assist. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
