Bonny Fire: Evacuation Orders Lifted

The Riverside County Fire Department reported that containment of the Bonny Fire southeast of Aguanga reached 80% on Wednesday, marking an increase from the previous update. This increase occurred at 7 p.m., following the morning update that saw containment rise from 50% to 60%. Full containment is expected by Monday.

All mandatory evacuation orders related to the fire were lifted on Wednesday. Firefighters continued their efforts throughout the night, reinforcing containment lines and extinguishing remaining hot spots. The fire did not spread beyond its perimeter, which covers an area of 2,322 acres. The updated mapping resulted in a slight increase in acreage from the previous estimate of 2,300 acres. The Riverside County Fire Department continued building containment lines and patrolling the fire area on Wednesday night.

The brush fire started on Thursday afternoon in the vicinity of Bonny and Barber lanes, near the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. As of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, the evacuation orders for properties north of the San Diego County line and south of Ramsey Road were lifted. However, evacuation warnings remain in effect for the area south of Bowers Road, north of Rim Rock Road, east of Bonny, and west of Chapman Road.

Some firefighting crews were released from the Bonny Fire on Wednesday afternoon to assist with battling brush fires in Sage and Cabazon. On Friday, the fire threatened Chapman and Johnston roads, but the quick response from Cal Fire air tankers and water-dropping helicopters protected nearby homes from damage. Unfortunately, one outbuilding and a vehicle were destroyed. One firefighter sustained minor injuries over the weekend.

At its peak, the fire had approximately 2,000 personnel on the ground, including county engine and hand crews, as well as firefighters from various departments such as Corona Fire Department, Hemet Fire Department, and Murrieta Fire & Rescue. Hot shot crews from Kern County were also dispatched to the sparsely populated area where the fire occurred. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
