Blue star Lee Ryan, known for his role in the band Blue, received a suspended prison sentence of 12 months at Isleworth Crown Court. The sentence was given for racially aggravated common assault by beating and behaving abusively towards a cabin crew member. This development occurred when the 40-year-old singer was seen slurring his words and stumbling around on a British Airways flight from Glasgow to London City Airport on July 31 last year. Ryan had consumed an entire bottle of port before boarding the plane.
During the trial, it was revealed that Ryan had pleaded guilty to being under the influence on an aircraft. Consequently, he received a four-month suspended jail term, which would run concurrently with his racially aggravated common assault charge. The court heard that Ryan’s actions took place after he had been denied further alcohol on the plane and instructed to return to his seat. He proceeded to make derogatory comments about flight attendant Leah Gordon’s appearance, referring to her as a “chocolate cookie,” and proceeded to grab her wrists.
During the sentencing, Judge Nicholas Wood emphasized the impact of Ryan’s actions, stating that what might have seemed like a brief moment on the plane felt like an eternity for everyone involved. As part of his sentence, the judge ordered Ryan to compensate Gordon with £2,500, pay Jade Smith, another member of the cabin crew, £750 in damages, and cover £510 in costs.
