‘Bold Eagle’ Triumphs as Best Short Film, Pioneers All-Filipino Showcase at Canadian Festival

The director of the film “Bold Eagle,” Whammy Alcazaren, expressed his joy and surprise at winning the Best Short Film award at the 2023 Fantasia International Film Festival (IFF) in Montreal, Canada. Alcazaren described the film as unusual and challenging, making it even more rewarding to see the audience enjoy it. The Fantasia IFF is known for its promotion of genre films and support for independent filmmakers, making this award particularly meaningful.

“Bold Eagle” tells the story of Bold, a character trapped at home with his talking cat. Seeking solace, Bold turns to the arms of strangers as they both search for true happiness. The film explores the impact of technology and social media on Bold’s perception of his place in the world.

Alcazaren shared that the film reflects the strange and difficult time of the pandemic. It represents the feelings of being stuck at home, forced to confront personal identity and one’s role in society. The film serves as a chaotic expression of the director’s emotions during this time. Alcazaren wanted to convey the idea that we are not alone in our struggles, emphasizing the desire for change and happiness that unites us all.

In an exciting development, “Bold Eagle” will also be screened at the 2023 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. The film is part of the “Festival’s Best: Shorts” section and will be shown at the Cinema Bonifacio in Pasay City. Whammy Alcazaren is proud to have his film included in the program “Pinoy Party,” curated by Fantasia IFF programmer Ariel Esteban Cayer. Cayer aimed to showcase emerging Filipino filmmakers who explore themes of identity and revolt, combining fantasy and social realities.

The program features four other films: “When You Left Me On That Boulevard” by Kayla Galang, “Hito” by Stephen Lopez, “Luzonensis Osteoporosis” by Glenn Barit, and “It’s Raining Frogs Outside” by Maria Estela Paiso. Alemberg Ang, the producer of “Bold Eagle,” assisted Cayer in creating the program and expressed pride in the achievements of the Filipino indie community.

While the current circumstances prevented the filmmakers from attending the festival in person, the “Pinoy Party” program can be accessed online for all to enjoy. Despite the budgetary constraints faced by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the program aims to showcase the talent and creativity of Filipino short films.

In conclusion, the success of “Bold Eagle” at the Fantasia IFF and its inclusion in the “Pinoy Party” program highlight the impact and significance of the film in the world of independent cinema.
