Bob Melvin Suggests Former Giants Player Matt Williams May Be Added to New Staff at NBC Sports Bay Area & California

In order to prepare for a crucial offseason, the Giants are focusing on building a robust coaching staff under new manager Bob Melvin.

Bob Melvin appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area’s Laura Britt on the latest episode of the “Giants Talk” podcast, alluding to the possibility of adding coaches with previous ties to the organization to the staff in San Francisco.

“We’re trying to get a coaching staff together here,” Melvin expressed. “We’re trying to get some local flavor to it as well. Maybe some past Giants are going to show up. So that’s the focus right now.”

Melvin emphasized his intention to bring in longtime Giants third baseman Matt Williams as a coach, citing Williams’ experience on his staff in Oakland and the last two seasons with the San Diego Padres.

Two seasons as the manager of the Washington Nationals in 2014 and 2015, and years as the third base coach for Melvin were also among his qualifications.

Melvin stressed the importance of Bay Area roots for the coaching staff, as well as the continuity in the organization for turning the franchise around.

“I want guys to understand the history of the Giants,” Melvin stated. “A lot of guys that grew up in the Bay Area understand that. I also want continuity in the organization because you have to believe when you’re in a good organization, there’s a chance to get to the big leagues.”

As Melvin prepares to build a coaching staff, he emphasized the need for a balanced approach, with a mix of outside hires and internal promotions.

“So there has to be a balance,” Melvin shared. “I’m new coming in. There are going to be some guys that are important to me that I’ll be bringing in from the outside. But I also want to promote from within.”

With 20 years of experience as a major league manager, Melvin aims to leverage his expertise to shape a coaching staff as the Giants embark on a pivotal season in their history.
