June 17 (UPI) — West Virginia Mountaineers head basketball coach, Bob Huggins, was apprehended by the Pittsburgh police for driving under the influence on Friday.

Huggins, aged 69, was charged with DUI and subsequently released from police custody, according to the public safety blotter published by the police department.

He is scheduled to attend a preliminary hearing at an unspecified future date.

The police report indicated that officers encountered a black SUV obstructing traffic in the middle of the road around 8:30 p.m. The SUV had an open driver’s side door and a flat, shredded tire.

Upon arrival, the officers noticed that the driver was struggling to maneuver the SUV and enable other vehicles to pass, prompting them to initiate a traffic stop by activating their lights.

The report stated, “Upon questioning, officers had strong suspicion to believe the male was intoxicated.”

During their investigation, the police discovered empty beer cans inside a trash bag within the SUV. It was revealed that Huggins had a blood alcohol level of .210%, which exceeds the legal limit of .08%.

Following the arrest, West Virginia University issued a statement.

The statement reads, “West Virginia University is aware of an incident last night involving Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Huggins, for which he was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) in the City of Pittsburgh. We are gathering more information and will take appropriate action once the review is complete.”

Huggins has been coaching West Virginia since 2007 and previously faced controversy earlier this year for making homophobic remarks during a radio interview in Cincinnati.

As a result, he was suspended for three games and issued an apology for his comments.
