Bloomingdale’s Window Display Embraces Barbie’s Spectacular Reign

Bloomy’s, the renowned palace of shopization, has undergone a transformation into a vibrant and whimsical world known as Barbiedale. Every inch of its windows is adorned with Barbie-themed displays that are sure to captivate any passerby. Leigh Ann Tischler, the Director of Windows, shared with me the creative process behind these captivating showcases.

Due to licensing restrictions, we were unable to create exact replicas of Margot Robbie or any other talent from the Barbie movie. Instead, we had to bring the essence of the film to life through abstract mannequins and our signature Bloomingdale’s ‘B’ font. The collaboration between Mattel, Warner Brothers, and our team involved numerous approvals and meticulous attention to detail. It was a back-and-forth process, with feedback ranging from the movement of water in our video installation to the overall presentation of the windows.

Our windows serve as a form of street theater, captivating the audience and immersing them in the world of Barbie. But what happens to these marvelous displays once their time is up? We believe in the importance of sustainability, so our mannequins and props are carefully stored for future use. Barbie’s vanity might find a new home, and even her surfboards could be repurposed for next summer’s display.

Sometimes, even with the best technology, things can go awry. In 2019, we experimented with live robotic arms in our windows, and unfortunately, some damage occurred. However, our mannequins, which are the true stars of our displays, remain steadfast and rarely encounter any mishaps. We were honored to have the president of Mattel visit us and pose in front of the Barbie windows wearing a Barbie T-shirt. His appreciation for our work was truly heartwarming.

Patricia Arquette, known for her insightful comments, gave an unconventional perspective on success. For her, success is having an abundance of toilet paper. Opening a cupboard and seeing a stockpile of 30 rolls brings her a sense of luxury, regardless of any other material possessions. It highlights the little things in life that can bring immense joy.
