Blaze in Canyon North of MoVal Approaches 350-Acre Mark

A brush fire ignited on Friday in a scenic canyon located north of Moreno Valley. The fire quickly spread and consumed nearly 340 acres of land, prompting precautionary evacuations. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The Riverside County Fire Department received reports of the blaze around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Reche Canyon Road and High Country Drive, near the boundary of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

In response, multiple fire crews from various agencies, including the county, Idyllwild Fire Protection District, and Cal Fire-San Bernardino County, were dispatched to the scene. They encountered rapidly spreading flames within the dense vegetation.

Some outbuildings in the fire’s path reportedly sustained damage as the flames advanced eastward.

The initial area where the fire originated has relatively low population density, consisting of both single-family houses and mobile homes. However, the fire’s trajectory posed a potential threat to a larger community adjacent to the Badlands.

An evacuation order was issued for residences situated south of Reche Canyon, north of Alta Vista Drive, west of Locust Avenue, and east of Reche Vista Drive. Additionally, a neighboring community received an evacuation warning.

To combat the fire, six air tankers from Cal Fire and five water-dropping helicopters made strategic runs, successfully slowing the fire’s progression. This allowed ground crews to begin closing gaps. However, as of 4:30 p.m., the fire continued to advance, albeit at a reduced pace.

Despite this ongoing challenge, some of the air resources were released to assist with other wildfires in the region.

California Highway Patrol officers were present in the area to manage traffic due to the significant presence of emergency vehicles. However, Reche Canyon Road remained unaffected and open for use.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
