Blackhawks take action: Corey Perry’s contract terminated due to misconduct

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks are parting ways with Corey Perry, which has raised significant questions about the organization’s culture.

According to the Blackhawks, Perry engaged in unacceptable conduct, prompting them to take steps towards terminating his contract. Perry was sent home last week without explanation, adding to the intrigue.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the team revealed that an internal investigation found Perry in violation of his NHL Standard Player Contract and club policies aimed at creating a professional and safe work environment. Chicago has placed Perry on unconditional waivers, and his contract will be terminated pending clearance by Wednesday.

However, the team has not disclosed specific details about Perry’s conduct or the reasons behind their actions.

General manager Kyle Davidson emphasized the confidential nature of the matter, stating, “As this is an individual personnel matter, I will not be able to disclose any details related to the initial reporting or the findings.”

Davidson also addressed baseless rumors, clarifying, “This does not involve any players or their families, and anything that suggests otherwise, or anyone that suggests otherwise, is wildly inaccurate and frankly it’s disgusting.”

Pat Morris, Perry’s agent, has not responded to requests for comment, further fueling speculation surrounding the situation. Perry had previously cited personal matters for his absence.

Following a report in October 2021 that exposed the mishandling of a player’s sexual assault allegations, the Blackhawks have made significant policy and procedural changes. The Perry incident was framed as part of this ongoing effort to address organizational culture.

Davidson reiterated the team’s commitment to cultural change, stating, “I think more than anything, it reinforced the resolve we have to change the culture and make sure we’re doing the right things and upholding our values and making sure that we continue to build a culture of accountability.”

Regarding Perry’s case, Davidson suggested that the new reporting processes for misconduct had made a difference. Perry has been sidelined since the November 19 game against Buffalo, with the team learning about the issue in Columbus the following week.

Davidson met with the players to inform them of the decision to sever ties with Perry, also noting that he has been in contact with the NHL and NHL players’ association, both of which were understanding of the situation.

The 38-year-old Perry, who joined the Blackhawks in a June trade with Tampa Bay, has had a successful career with notable accomplishments. He had been brought in to provide veteran leadership to the team’s younger players, including No. 1 pick Connor Bedard. However, Perry is exiting the organization after 16 games, while Hall is out for the season due to injury.

On another front, Chicago acquired forward Anthony Beauvillier from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2024 draft. Beauvillier brings his experience and offensive prowess to the Blackhawks after a trade from the Islanders to the Canucks earlier in the year.
