Billboard: Miley Cyrus Reflects on Her Feud with Sinead O’Connor

Miley Cyrus is taking a moment to reflect on the pivotal moments in her career, both the highs and lows, following the release of her introspective new single titled “Used to Be Young.”

During her ABC concert special “Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions)” on Thursday night (Aug. 24), the 30-year-old superstar looked back on a significant incident in 2013 involving herself and the late Sinead O’Connor. O’Connor had criticized Cyrus in an open letter for appearing nude in her “Wrecking Ball” music video. In the letter, O’Connor speculated that Cyrus didn’t have self-care and made the creative choice to portray herself in a way that would be perceived as “cool” by the industry and men. She wrote, “You are worth more than your body or your sexual appeal.”

At the time, Cyrus shared a screenshot of O’Connor’s tweets, which were written during a fragile mental state. Cyrus compared O’Connor to Amanda Bynes, who was also struggling with mental health issues. In response, O’Connor accused Cyrus of mocking her and Bynes, as well as trivializing their mental health struggles. O’Connor questioned who advised Cyrus to act this way.

During the ABC special, Cyrus mentioned that she expected controversy and backlash but didn’t anticipate other women putting her down or turning against her, especially women who had been in similar positions. Cyrus received an open letter from Sinead O’Connor at the time, but she didn’t know about O’Connor’s fragile mental state. Additionally, Cyrus was only 20 years old and had limited understanding of mental illness. All she saw was another woman telling her that her creative decisions were not her own.

Cyrus continued, expressing that childhood triggers and traumas often resurface in strange ways. She had been judged for her choices for a long time and felt exhausted. Finally, she reached a point where she was making her own choices and decisions, and having that agency taken away upset her deeply. She extended her blessings and respect to Sinead O’Connor.

Sinead O’Connor passed away in July at the age of 56. During the special, Cyrus performed her song “Wonder Woman” from the “Endless Summer Vacation” album and dedicated it to O’Connor.
