President Biden, 80, made headlines with a moment of confusion at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during a Veterans Day service, during which he required stage directions from an Arlington Honor Guard after laying a ceremonial wreath. Biden took several steps in the wrong direction before being directed to his spot next to Vice-President Kamala Harris, with an embarrassing moment of confusion at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The President delivered a speech on the ‘ultimate sacrifice’ of American troops, acknowledging escalating global tensions and praising how ‘Americans stand watch around the world.’ He stated that ‘war and conflict, death and loss, are part of our American story.’
During his remarks, pro-Palestine demonstrators descended on his Delaware mansion in protest of US support for Israel in the conflict in the Middle East.
Biden, along with Vice President Kamala, First Lady Jill Biden, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, honored fallen soldiers at the service. He made a speech in which he honored the troops and emphasized the importance of democracy. He also spoke about the men and women who ‘gave what President Lincoln called the last full measure of devotion.’
The President revealed a card he’s carried since he was vice-president that shows the updated number of US soldiers who’ve died in recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. ‘Today, that number is 7,036,’ he said, honoring the troops and speaking of the role of America’s military might around the world.
As the President spoke at Arlington, pro-Palestine supporters protested the US involvement in the Middle East conflict outside his Delaware mansion, further adding to the political theme emphasized during Biden’s speech at Arlington. There, he spoke about the importance of the ‘right to vote freely and fairly and conveniently’ and the hope that democracy will continue to thrive around the world.
