There has been a surge in labor organizing and stoppages, resulting in halted assembly lines and production shutdowns in recent months.

These high-profile contract fights have taken place nationwide, coinciding with a shift in public opinion towards greater support for organized labor. According to a recent Gallup poll conducted in August, 67 percent of Americans now approve of labor unions, a significant increase from the 48 percent approval rating in 2009, the lowest recorded since Gallup began asking the question in 1936.

Despite some notable successes in organizing workers, such as at Starbucks and Amazon, union membership remains historically low. In 2022, only 10.1 percent of Americans belonged to a union, the lowest figure on record according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
