Biden’s Education Secretary, Miguel Cardona, Faces Backlash for Criticizing ‘Disruptive’ Parents Following Violent Altercation at Virginia School Board Meeting

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona made controversial remarks about American parents, accusing them of “misbehaving in public” and acting as if they “know what’s right for kids.” These comments sparked immediate backlash, especially from parents who have been vocal at school board meetings across the country, advocating for limitations on COVID-19 mandates, the banning of critical race theory, and sexually explicit books in school libraries.

Cardona also commented on the current state of education debates, pointing out the lack of civility that used to exist when discussing different viewpoints. He stated, “We could disagree. We could have healthy conversations around what’s best for kids.” However, he expressed a lack of respect for individuals who misbehave in public and claim to know what is best for children, suggesting that there is a divide between those who are fighting for kids and those who are fighting against them.

Nicole Neily, the president of Parents Defending Education, openly criticized Cardona and his stance on parents’ opinions. She argued that Cardona’s actions contradict his claim of respecting differences of opinion, highlighting the closure of the Education Department’s “faux parents council” and their failure to include members who would provide viewpoint diversity.

The controversy surrounding education debates intensified when the National School Boards Association (NSBA) sent a letter to the Biden administration, requesting an investigation into school board meetings where parents were speaking out. The letter suggested that these parents were a threat and requested their examination as potential “domestic terrorists.” This led to the Justice Department instructing the FBI to create a task force addressing threats against school officials.

The NSBA later apologized for their letter after facing significant backlash. However, the incident coincided with the election of Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who focused his campaign on advocating for parents’ rights in education. One parent, Scott Smith, gained attention after being dragged out of a school board meeting for protesting policies following his daughter’s rape by a transgender student in a bathroom. Governor Youngkin recently pardoned Smith, emphasizing that parents should have the final say in their children’s education.

Cardona’s comments about parents believing they know what’s best for children directly oppose Youngkin’s stance, leading to speculation that Cardona was referencing individuals like Smith who have been outspoken at school board meetings.
