WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has announced a visionary plan aimed at providing high-speed internet access to every American household by 2030, with an investment of over $42 billion.

The allocated funds, already approved by Congress through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and under the supervision of the U.S. Department of Commerce, will be distributed over the next two years through the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment program. This initiative represents a significant step forward in Biden’s strategy to invest in America as he gears up for his reelection campaign.

“In the 21st century, high-speed internet is not a luxury, but a necessity for all Americans,” emphasized Vice President Kamala Harris during her speech at the White House.

“These investments aim to connect people to the digital economy, promote domestic manufacturing of fiber optic cable, and create well-paying jobs in internet infrastructure development across our states. They will enhance our competitiveness and drive economic growth throughout the country for years to come,” stated Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

Under the program, each state will receive a minimum of $107 million, with 19 states set to receive more than $1 billion. Texas is expected to receive over $3.3 billion, representing one of the highest allocations.

White House officials have drawn parallels between this plan and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s initiative to bring electricity to rural America in the 1930s.

“In today’s society, high-speed internet is simply a necessity,” emphasized Mitch Landrieu, White House infrastructure coordinator. “President Biden and Vice President Harris are committed to ensuring that no community is left behind as we connect every American to high-speed internet.”

Currently, more than 7% of the country, comprising of over 8.5 million homes and small businesses, is considered underserved, lacking internet speeds that meet the government’s minimum standards of at least 25 megabits per second for downloads and 3 Mbps for uploads.
