President Biden has selected Jack Lew, the former Treasury Secretary, to be the next ambassador to Israel, pending confirmation from the Senate. Lew previously served as Treasury secretary from 2013-2017 during the Obama administration and was the director of the Office of Management and Budget from 1998 to 2001 under President Clinton. He also held positions at Citigroup and served in both presidencies at the National Security Council. Lew is currently co-president of the board of the National Library of Israel USA and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
In 2013, Lew was confirmed as Treasury Secretary with bipartisan support, garnering a 71-26 vote. This time, he will need at least 50 Senators’ support in a closely divided Senate to secure confirmation as ambassador.
If confirmed, Lew will replace Tom Nides, Biden’s previous ambassador, who left the position after two years. Lew’s appointment comes during a challenging period in U.S.-Israel relations, with the Biden administration emphasizing Israel’s importance as an ally but expressing concerns regarding judicial reforms proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which could potentially undermine the independence of the judiciary.
