Biden Labels Chinese President as an ‘Authoritarian Leader’

President Biden made a statement on Tuesday regarding Chinese President Xi Jinping, referring to him as a dictator who was upset when the Chinese spy balloon was shot down in February because he was unaware of its existence. Speaking at a fundraising event in Kentsfield, Calif., Biden explained that the balloon had strayed off course, passing through Alaska and the United States before being shot down. Jinping was embarrassed by the incident and denied its presence. Additionally, Biden reassured the attendees that China’s economic difficulties should be a cause for concern but not excessive worry. Later, during another campaign event in San Francisco, Biden mentioned the possibility of climate adviser John Kerry visiting China to discuss energy production and methane issues. Earlier, in response to the spy balloon situation, Biden had characterized it as more embarrassing for Beijing than intentional, as the balloon had remained airborne over the U.S. before being taken down near the coast of South Carolina. China had expressed its intention to retaliate at the time. Biden also acknowledged Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent visit to China and praised his efforts in improving relations between the two countries.
