President Biden has given authorization to the Pentagon to deploy up to 3,000 reservists to Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, bolstering U.S. troops stationed there.
The order from Biden allows the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security to send active duty units and individual members of the Selected Reserve or the Individual Ready Reserve.
The total number of deployed units should not exceed 3,000 members at one time, with a maximum of 450 members from the Individual Ready Reserve, according to the order.
The decision to deploy reservists comes after President Biden’s recent visit to Europe, where he traveled through the United Kingdom, Lithuania, and Finland. The purpose of the trip was to showcase the strength of the international coalition against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Biden expressed confidence in the mission’s success, stating that he and other NATO leaders demonstrated a more united military alliance than ever before.
