Biden Aims for $40B in Urgent Spending

President Biden has submitted a funding request to Congress for emergency spending amounting to approximately $40 billion. The proposal includes $24 billion for aid to Ukraine and other global causes, $12 billion to replenish federal disaster relief funds, and $4 billion for issues at the Mexico border, according to Politico. While both parties support aid to Ukraine and disaster spending, this measure could complicate efforts to avoid a government shutdown before the September 30 deadline. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has expressed the Democrats’ desire to collaborate with Republicans to prevent a shutdown and fund this critical emergency request.

However, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and some fellow Republicans have stated that they will not support new aid to Ukraine unless it is accompanied by budget cuts, as reported by USA Today. The fund for Ukraine assistance is projected to last until early fall, meaning additional funding will be required for military operations throughout the winter. The funding request for the southern border aims to address issues such as the fentanyl trade, as well as provide shelter and services for migrants.

In terms of disaster funding, the request includes money for increased firefighter pay for teams combating wildfires in wildlands, as stated by ABC News. FEMA has expressed that it is running low on funds to address natural disasters during a crucial time. Additionally, President Biden signed a Major Disaster Declaration in response to the fatal wildfires in Hawaii.

A CNN poll conducted last week found that 55% of US respondents opposed approving new funding for the war in Ukraine.
