As then-President Trump’s tenure in the White House came to a close, a state development agency in Alaska was granted multiple oil and gas leases, ending decades of drilling restrictions in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Biden administration’s Department of the Interior has now revoked the seven remaining leases that were held by the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, as reported by the Washington Post. In a statement on Wednesday, President Biden emphasized the need to protect this awe-inspiring region, referring to Alaska as the “Last Frontier” and expressing the responsibility to safeguard it amidst the rapid warming caused by the climate crisis.

In addition to canceling the leases on the 19.6 million acres in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to polar bears and caribou, the Interior Department announced that leasing would be prohibited on over 10 million acres in Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve, described as the largest undisturbed public land in the United States, according to Reuters. President Biden had pledged to revoke these leases as part of his climate agenda, and the Interior Department’s review revealed serious flaws in the analysis that informed the lease contracts issued in 2021, providing Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland with the justification needed to cancel them.

The decision has garnered mixed reactions, pleasing some environmentalists and local Indigenous groups while facing criticism from others. Chris Wood, the head of the conservation group Trout Unlimited, views it as a heartening move for conservation in the long run, stating to the Post that such opportunities are rare. However, some environmental organizations that were already upset with Biden’s approval of the Willow drilling project earlier this year argue that Wednesday’s announcement falls short of their expectations.

Alaskan lawmakers have also expressed their discontent. Democratic US Rep. Mary Peltola voiced deep frustration over the reversal of the leases, highlighting the missed job opportunities for Indigenous communities, as reported by the AP. GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan characterized the decisions as an attack on Alaska, while fellow Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski denounced them as reckless moves that defy common sense. The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority intends to challenge the lease cancellations legally, accusing the Biden administration of arbitrary disregard for federal law based on campaign rhetoric.
