Biden Administration Allocates Up to $24 Million for Advancement of mRNA Technology in Cancer Research

In a groundbreaking move, the Biden administration’s newly established biomedical research agency has announced a $24 million investment in the development of mRNA platforms. These platforms aim to enhance the immune system’s ability to fight against cancer and other diseases more effectively.

Emory University in Atlanta will spearhead the research efforts with funding provided by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), a high-risk, high-reward research entity established by the administration.

This initiative aligns with President Biden’s “cancer moonshot” campaign, which seeks to halve the cancer death rate by 2047.

The establishment of ARPA-H and the cancer moonshot initiative reflects President Biden’s commitment to bipartisan collaboration in addressing critical issues like cancer treatment.

This grant marks the first award from ARPA-H’s inaugural round of proposals, which opened last year.

The project’s objective is to develop a “toolbox” of mRNA and related technologies capable of triggering beneficial immune responses. It aims to activate immune cells to identify and destroy tumors, with potential applications extending to autoimmune disorders, transplants, and infectious diseases.

In a statement, President Biden acknowledged the life-saving impact of mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines, emphasizing the potential of these therapies to revolutionize cancer treatment and other challenging diagnoses. He expressed enthusiasm for the ambitious efforts undertaken by the skilled team at Emory University.

ARPA-H was launched with an initial funding of $1 billion last year. President Biden has proposed allocating up to $2.5 billion to the agency in his fiscal 2024 budget.
