Bernie Sanders emphatically appeals to the left to support Biden in order to prevent the highly perilous Trump administration

Progressive voters in the US must unite behind Joe Biden rather than considering any other Democratic primary challengers, according to Bernie Sanders. Sanders believes that the threat of another Donald Trump presidency is too great to ignore. In an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Sanders, a senator and Vermont independent who aligns with Democrats, stated, “We’re taking on the former president, who, in fact, does not believe in democracy – he is an authoritarian, and a very, very dangerous person. I think at this moment there has to be unification of progressive people in general in all of this country.”

Sanders made these remarks as Trump continues to face over 90 criminal charges across four indictments related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential race and his illegal retention of classified documents and hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels. Despite the legal troubles, polls show that Trump has a significant lead over other Republican candidates in the presidential primary.

While current polls show Biden ahead of Trump, there are still long-shot Democratic primary challengers such as Robert F Kennedy Jr and Marianne Williamson, as well as third-party progressive candidate Cornel West. Sanders, who was the runner-up for the Democratic nomination in both 2016 and 2020, endorsed Biden’s re-election campaign quickly this time. However, his endorsement prompted West to accuse him of supporting Biden out of fear of Trump’s neo-fascism.

In response, Sanders clarified on CNN’s State of the Union that he believes there is a real question about the future of democracy in the United States. He criticized Trump for his disregard for democracy, women’s rights, social justice, and the fight against bigotry. Sanders also referred to the Trump administration’s influence on the US Supreme Court, which has made decisions that dismantled federal abortion rights, race-conscious admissions in higher education, and equality for same-sex couples.

Sanders emphasized the need for the progressive community to come together to defeat Trump or any other Republican nominee while supporting Biden. However, he also expressed his intention to push Biden to address corporate greed, income inequality, and wealth disparity in the US. Sanders has previously proposed confiscating all income over $999 million, arguing that individuals with such extreme wealth can still thrive without becoming billionaires.
