Berlusconi’s Charismatic Milan Teams: A Reflection of His Charm and Class

I have a sense that “Mr A” had a fondness for him as well, as many did in Italy and beyond. I remember being at Italia 90 in Rome for Ireland’s famous match against the home team, and hearing the chants of “Forza Italia” while Diego Maradona was captivating the Italian fans. It’s possible that Mr B found inspiration in the name Forza Italia for his political party, as it perfectly suited his own personality. Despite his flaws, he never seemed narcissistic – he had charm and class, much like his successful Milan teams.

Someone asked, “Why did he get involved in politics?” The answer is surely power, as it seduces ambitious people who want to make a difference. But with that power, he also did a lot of good for Italy.

Let’s have a vote on how to distribute our “pot of gold” to best fulfill the desires of the people. Your editorial suggests that giving voters what they want can be more rewarding than giving them what’s good for them. So, a poll to determine the three most important desires would help the government make informed decisions.

While sailing on the Pembroke-Rosslare ferry, I couldn’t help but be transported back to the 50s and 60s when there were fewer cars. Those cars had to be transported on special carriages by train to the harbor and then hoisted by crane onto the ferry. The present-day ferries are much larger, and the harbor has changed significantly. It was a magical travel experience as a child, but it also highlighted the poverty of the time when emigrants boarded the boat train from Dublin to the UK.

Reading Stefanie Preissner’s account of her dental procedure reminded me of a joke by Ken Dodd. “When I visit the dentist, he’s the nervous one.”

Taking a maths exam shouldn’t be so stressful. I passed honours maths in my Leaving Cert in 1974 and went on to study higher level maths in university. I’m grateful that my children in Canada didn’t have to endure the stress of the Leaving Cert. Looking at the recent higher level maths exam, I am appalled that students are subjected to such difficulty. My sympathies go out to those who had to endure it.

Contrary to Declan Foley’s claim, I have no opinion on James Joyce’s sexual relationships. I simply responded to his comparison of Joyce’s view on marriage with what he called “phoney” Catholic teachings. Foley brings up a valid point about the church’s semantics concerning Boris Johnson’s marriage, which undermines the faithfulness of many couples. It turns out Joyce had multiple extramarital relationships as well, especially in Rome. So it seems that Joyce and the church have more in common than expected, and using Joyce to criticize the church lacks credibility.
