Beloved Restaurants in the Capital Region We Still Long For

On August 25, 2023, the capital region residents are known for their long-lasting memories. Even though some of their favorite establishments may close down and be replaced by new ones, they will not be easily forgotten. A few prominent examples that are always mentioned are Andy’s & Sons deli, Joe’s Deli, Woolworth’s Lunch Counter in Albany, and Shakey’s Pizza in Latham. However, according to Steve Barnes’ reports in Table Hopping over the years, there are many more establishments that hold sentimental value to the community.

One such place was Andrea’s Pub, a beloved community watering hole that opened its doors in 1984. Unfortunately, it closed down in April 2018. Another cherished establishment was Andy & Sons Importing Co., an Italian deli and food shop that had been in business for 65 years. After owners Vincent and Carmen Benincasa retired, the doors of this beloved deli were closed forever at 256 Delaware Ave in Albany.

In Hillsdale (Columbia County), there was Aubergine, which opened in the 1990s. Housed in a Dutch Colonial brick building constructed in 1783, it had previously been known as L’Hostellerie Bressane. Aubergine received a rare four-star rating from the Times Union, making it a memorable spot for locals.

Bavarian Chalet, located in Guilderland, was a renowned destination for authentic German cuisine and beer from 1963 to 2005. It provided an immersive experience in Bavarian culture, but sadly, it couldn’t sustain operations beyond 2005.

Lastly, there was Blue 82, a trendy cocktail lounge in Albany that made its debut on Memorial Day weekend in 2005. After nearly a year of legal disputes between the business and its landlord, it closed its doors in 2022.

It’s essential to acknowledge the contributions of Daniel Roberts, the executive news editor for digital at the Times Union.
