Everton’s Secret Disciplinary Hearing into Alleged FFP Breaches Begins

The disciplinary hearing regarding Everton’s alleged breach of Premier League spending rules is currently underway in secret. The independent commission, which started on Tuesday, is set to conclude next week. The Premier League will announce the verdict and any sanctions imposed, without prior notice to other clubs, sometime next month. The commission operates without a specific timeframe.

The level of secrecy surrounding the hearing is so high that senior figures at Everton were unaware of its commencement when contacted by Mail Sport today.

Last March, Everton was charged with breaching Financial Fair Play regulations after reporting financial losses of almost £372m, exceeding the competition’s limit of £105m. However, they have vehemently denied any wrongdoing and are confident they will be cleared. The club claims they received allowances from the Premier League due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If found guilty, Everton may face several penalties, including fines, transfer embargoes, or points deductions, potentially affecting the relegation battle. The case also poses significant financial risks for the club and their proposed sale to 777Partners. Burnley, Leeds, and Leicester have threatened to sue Everton for £300m in lost earnings if they are found guilty. In their joint letter to the Premier League and 777, the clubs argue that Everton narrowly avoided relegation last season.
