He was prepared for his close-up. Alongside fellow rookie Kevin Korchinski, they embarked on their rookie lap without helmets, taking to the ice before their teammates. Korchinski set him up with an open net — and he failed to score.
“I recall Kev and I attempting that little pass, and I completely botched it. So, I’ll probably receive some online trolling,” he admitted. “But it was an enjoyable experience, really cool. And skating without a helmet was a blast too. Yeah, I definitely had a lot of fun.”
Bedard showcased his puck tricks during warmups. At one point, while he stood in the corner, Iceburgh, the Penguins mascot, stood behind the glass teasing him. Veteran Corey Perry came to Bedard’s defense, forcefully slapping against the glass.
But that was just the beginning.
Bedard positioned himself for the opening face-off against Crosby.
“Hey, Sid, welcome back for another season,” referee Kelly Sutherland, wearing a microphone for television, greeted. “Connor, welcome to the NHL, man.”
“Thank you,” Bedard replied.
“Alright, guys,” Sutherland declared. “It’s showtime. Let’s have an incredible game.”
Crosby dominated the face-off.
“I just really wanted to win it,” Bedard shared. “Unfortunately, I didn’t. But going into it, yes, it was undeniably cool and incredibly special. I tried to soak it all in, but ultimately, I had to focus on the hockey game. Nerves were certainly there. It’s a pretty monumental moment in your life. However, I tried to settle down and concentrate on the game.”
