Be Prepared: Experts Warn of an Impending Pandemic That Could Surpass Covid-19 in Fatalities

The Next Major Pandemic: Are We Prepared?

The next major pandemic is looming on the horizon, and according to global health experts, it has the potential to be far worse than the one we just experienced. Millions more lives could be at stake, yet very little is being done to prepare for it. This is a terrifying reality that we must face.

To combat this unknown threat, known ominously as Disease X by the World Health Organisation, we will once again rely on the development and distribution of vaccines. However, there is no guarantee that we will be able to accomplish this in time. The Covid-19 crisis, which many considered to be a significant challenge, may pale in comparison to what lies ahead.

In May 2020, governments around the world found themselves dangerously unprepared for a global health crisis. It was a wake-up call that should not be forgotten. Vaccines were our only hope, but the odds were stacked against us. Developing a vaccine for a human coronavirus had never been accomplished, and the success rate for new vaccines was discouragingly low. The challenge was enormous.

It was during this critical period that I received a call from the Health Secretary, asking me to head the new Vaccine Taskforce. I left my job to dedicate myself to finding viable vaccine candidates. Scientists worked tirelessly to develop potential vaccines, and the taskforce carefully selected the most promising options. Deals were made, manufacturing plans were put in place, and the efforts paid off. Two vaccines were approved, and the UK became the first country to roll out a vaccination program.

However, we must not be complacent. Covid-19 could still mutate into more dangerous variants, and there are countless other viral threats out there. Viruses constantly mutate and find new hosts, and there are more viruses in existence today than any other life form. Scientists know of 25 virus families containing hundreds or thousands of different viruses, any of which could cause a future pandemic. They estimate that there could be over one million undiscovered viruses with the potential to jump species and cause devastating harm.

With the alarming increase in pandemics in recent years, we must face the reality that this is not simply a stroke of bad luck. Globalization, urbanization, and habitat destruction have contributed to the rise in outbreaks. As humans encroach on natural habitats, animals are pushed into closer proximity to different species, including us. This creates perfect conditions for viruses to make the jump to humans.

We must take action now to prepare for the next pandemic. Just as we invest in cybersecurity software to protect our devices, we must invest in protecting ourselves from real viruses. The cost of inaction is enormous. It is time to prioritize funding and resources to ensure we are prepared for the future.
