BBC presenter Fiona Bruce caught up in latest deepfake scam

“I believe this software has the potential to alleviate some of our most pressing social issues, such as poverty. It has the ability to truly help people,” Mr. Musk expresses in the manipulated video. The fabricated footage then prompts viewers to click on a link to participate in the fraudulent scheme.

“To kickstart your journey towards earning hundreds of pounds per hour and £5,700 per day, simply sign up here. See you on the following page,” the video asserts.

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has since removed the video and claims to have taken action against the associated accounts.

The BBC acknowledges the existence of this deepfake video and states that their legal team is urgently investigating the matter.

An official spokesperson adds, “In an era of growing disinformation, we urge individuals to verify links and URLs to ensure that they are obtaining news from a reliable source.”

“Deepfakes” are videos that initially appear genuine but are actually computer-generated using AI technology. These videos often portray individuals saying or doing things they have not actually done.

In most cases, deepfakes involve digitally superimposing one person’s face onto another individual’s body. However, it is also feasible to “lip-sync” an actual video to make the person in it appear to say something entirely different from what was originally spoken. The manipulated footage can then be paired with an AI-generated audio clip.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis previously threatened to take legal action against Facebook for a similar video that misused his image to promote a deceptive cryptocurrency scheme.

As Lewis expressed in July, “Every day, I come across advertisements on Facebook that feature my face, and this deepfake video was no exception. I simply do not trust social media platforms as far as I can see them.”
