Battery Plant to be Built in England by Owner of Jaguar Land Rover

Tata, the Indian-based conglomerate, has made a significant announcement, revealing plans to construct a battery plant worth £4 billion ($5.2 billion) in western England. This announcement comes as a welcome relief to the auto industry and lawmakers who have been concerned about the potential departure of car manufacturers from Britain.

As the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, a renowned British automaker, Tata’s battery plant would play a crucial role in supplying batteries to its factories in Britain. The plant, set to create 4,000 new jobs, is projected to produce nearly half of the country’s required electric car batteries by 2030.

The decision to build the battery plant in western England became possible due to the generous subsidies offered by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government. This announcement comes at a time when there are growing concerns that Britain’s car industry could be greatly affected by the transition to electric vehicles along with the country’s exit from the European Union, which serves as the main export market for British-made cars.

Having a domestic battery manufacturer eliminates the need for carmakers to import batteries, thereby avoiding hefty EU tariffs and high transportation costs. Currently, Nissan’s battery facility in northeast England is the only other battery plant in the country, linked to its largest car manufacturing plant.

It was reported recently that Tata considered building its battery plant in Spain, but such a move would have put Jaguar Land Rover cars manufactured in Britain at a disadvantage. The chosen site for the plant is likely to be in Somerset.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak devised an offer to alleviate concerns about the potential loss of one of the country’s largest automotive manufacturers. Grant Shapps, the British energy security secretary, highlighted the difficulty involved in securing the deal. While he declined to disclose the amount of aid and subsidies offered to Tata, the government assured that it would release the details in due course.

In a statement issued by the British government, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Tata’s chairman, expressed gratitude to the government for working closely to enable this investment.

Jaguar Land Rover, Britain’s second-largest automaker after Nissan, produced nearly 203,000 vehicles in the country last year. However, overall car production in Britain has sharply declined, falling from over 1.7 million in 2016 to 775,000 in the previous year.

In the competition to attract battery manufacturers to support carmakers, Britain is up against the United States, which offers significant subsidies to battery makers, as well as the European Union.

Despite the decline in car manufacturing since the Brexit vote in 2016, the industry remains vital to the British economy, employing 182,000 individuals, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. The majority of cars produced in Britain, around 80 percent, are exported, with nearly 60 percent going to the European Union.

Tata already has substantial investments in various industries in Britain. Alongside Jaguar Land Rover, the company has significant steel operations, including a large mill in Wales. Discussions have been ongoing with the government regarding financial assistance to transition the plant’s operations for low carbon emissions steel production.

Through its decision to invest in the battery plant, Tata confirms its strengthened commitment to the UK.
