Google is enhancing its chatbot Bard with new features to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving generative AI space. This move comes amidst growing competition from Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Anthropic, and other players.

The search giant introduced its competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, known as ChatGPT, to the public in March. Since then, Google has announced several updates, including those unveiled at its annual developer conference Google I/O in May. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has also revealed new features, such as the ChatGPT app for iOS and voice prompt integration.

Here are some of the updates that Google launched on Thursday:

  • Analysis of images: Bard now has image capabilities, which were initially announced as a Google Lens feature at Google I/O. Users can upload an image and ask Bard for information or request a caption based on the image. Note that this feature is currently available in English only.
  • Different styles of responses: Bard users can now adjust the tone and style of Bard’s responses across five options: simple, long, short, professional, or casual. For instance, users can ask Bard to assist in writing a marketplace listing for a vintage armchair and then shorten the response. This feature is currently available in English and will expand to other languages soon.
  • Read responses: Users now have the option to listen to Bard’s responses using audio. This functionality proves useful for those who want to hear the correct pronunciation of a word or enjoy listening to a poem or script. The feature supports over 40 languages.
  • More languages and regions: Bard now supports over 40 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, German, Hindi, and Spanish. Furthermore, it is now available in Europe after a delay caused by privacy concerns raised by The Irish Data Protection Commission. In its blog post, Google reassures that they have actively engaged with experts, policymakers, and privacy regulators to address these concerns.
